5 Tips to Balance Your Body with the Earth for Earth Day

1. We Embody the 5 Elements and 3 Primary Energies

Ayurveda is an ancient science (5,000 years) based on the truths that we, like everything else in nature, are composed of a combination of the universal five elements: space, air, fire, water, earth. These elements are represented by three primary energies called doshas (vata/air; pitta/fire; kapha/earth), with Ayurveda teaching that our health and well-being depend on the unique balance between these different energies.

The power of Ayurveda is so much more than just knowing your dosha — it’s about understanding how the elements inside and around you form a unique pattern. Everything in nature has its own signature mixture of these five elements, which then determines its own pure potential. Our doshas are determined by the combination of these elements, and their contribution to our uniqueness.

It’s not just about finding out which primary dosha guides your wellbeing, it’s about discovering what brings balance to one’s body, mind and spirit, and what causes imbalance, leading to dis-ease. The more you know about your specific dosha type (or mix), the better equipped you’ll be to keep things balanced! Find out your primary dosha type with our quiz!

2. Your Routine in Sync with the Earth

The Earth moves in cycles (day to night, winter through spring) and all plants and animals follow this cycle. We are no different when it comes to following these rhythms, but sometimes the artificial lights from technology can make us forget our connection with nature and lose touch with how long our days should be.

A routine is one of the keys to staying healthy in an era that does not follow a natural rhythm, and if we do not adjust, then our bodies will be thrown off-track. The Earth has been spinning for billions of years on its axis without fail, so there’s no way modern humans can’t align with this biology as well!

The more you stay disciplined with daily routines, like eating balanced meals or going outside during daylight hours, the better chance of happiness because you’re living according to your own circadian rhythm rather than adapting to an unnatural lifestyle based around artificial means.

3. Herbs to Ground and Support You

Ayurvedic herbs are an important part of practicing Ayurveda. Building upon the belief that we’re healthiest when we live in harmony with nature, Ayurveda uses nature’s herbal medicine to support the body’s natural functions and build strength from within.

Herbs can be used in many ways and it’s important to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before using them. That way, you can develop your own personal regimen that suits you best!

Vata dosha supporting herbs – to ground, warm and nourish you, herbs like lemon balm, ginger root, chamomile, ashwagandha, triphala, cardamom, clove, fennel serve as support

Pitta dosha supporting herbs – to calm, soothe, and cool, herbs such as lemongrass, mint, rose petals, gotu kola, bacopa, dandelion root, coriander, shatavari are great options

Kapha dosha supporting herbs – to warm, ignite and stimulate, consider light and aromatic herbs, such as sage, holy basil, thyme, turmeric, ginseng, triphala, black pepper

4. Eat in Harmony with the Earth

Eating healthy and being mindful while eating is essential for having a balanced life. Eating only when hungry, reducing or avoiding snacks, and eating according to the seasons will support you in exceptional ways. Our bodies are always talking to us, and it’s our job to listen!

Ayurveda teaches that if we eat in harmony with what grows locally during each season, our doshas remain at peace. Including plant-based organic foods, without additives or chemicals, ensures we aren’t doing harm to our bodies, while also providing nutrients for optimal health.

5. Breathe with the Earth

The breath is the one thing that begins and ends our earthly experience. It has power in every aspect of life and provides immediate relief when stress or anxiety takes control. Without conscious awareness of the breath, we aren’t taking full advantage of one of life’s most precious gifts. Yoga Nidra is one breathing example of how deep breathing can lead to greater peace and tranquility (and also helps battle insomnia!).

Guided meditations are also an excellent way to learn more about these techniques without having any prior knowledge about yoga. We need to take care of ourselves on a daily basis, to solidify the life we want to live in the long run. Focus on showing up for yourself in your everyday routine, and soon you will be leading the life you have always dreamed!
